Lisa Haisa Composing a Life
"Composing A Life": Blazing a Path to Your Authentic Self October 2005

Hello, Bonjour, Hola, Konichiwa, Shalom, Marhaba!

This month's theme is: Act It Believe It Become It

When I was traveling through the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, with my friend Ashley, we came across a Bedouin man in his mid-thirties who called himself "Hubbly-bubbly," because he loved smoking apple-filled hookah pipes twenty-four hours a day. Hubbly had only two rotting teeth left in his mouth, and at least an inch worth of dust baked into his dark brown skin. With every syllable he spoke, an unpleasant aroma would slip through his lips that would make Ash and I discreetly cover our noses with perfumed handkerchiefs. He befriended us and became our informal guide through Petra. He also began flirting brazenly with Ash and me, displaying a cockiness that mystified us, given his homely appearance and pungent odor. Snickering to ourselves, we spurned his advances. But then something odd began to happen. The more time we spent with him, the better looking and more charming he became. It was as if his own belief in his looks and charm were so strong that they gradually convinced us they were true. And they became real to us. We still declined his advances, though, which proved to be a good thing, because as he later explained to us, he respected us much more for having the discipline to resist him, unlike so many other "loose" foreign female visitors he had met.

Hubbly showed us that beauty can come from confidence, pride and a pure, strong soul. If a toothless, shower-deprived Bedouin living in a cave in the middle of the desert can see himself as a Don Juan and BECOME a Don Juan, what is to stop any of us from becoming that which we can dream ourselves as? In my Soul Blazing work, I meet a lot of clients who feel defeated, that life is against them, who have given up on their dreams because they feel so unattainable. I try to strip away these negative mythologies and allow them to see who they truly ARE inside. If they will allow themselves to BELIEVE and to ACT TO THE REST OF THE WORLD as if they are the person they have always wanted to be but never dared to become, then, like Hubbly Bubbly, they WILL BE that successful writer, that working actor, that wealthy entrepreneur, that person in love with their soul mate. In the next newsletter, I'll give you a powerful, practical tool for turning your dreams into beliefs, and your beliefs into reality. Until next time... Detach and Become.

Your Soul Blazer,

Lisa Haisha

Just grab your phone and follow the directions below.

You may want to print them first:

1. Dial 1-(435) 871-6003.

2. Enter one of the following playback codes.
(if you hear talking, hang up, dial back and enter the next one):
A) 486450#

D) 798811#

3. After you hear 'You are currently the only participant in this conference,' press *3.

4. Enter the Audio File Number for the recording, 101105# for Lisa's Soul Blazing Lecture, followed by the (#) sign. After the file number is confirmed, press (1).

5. If the file number is accepted, you will be asked to enter the number of minutes you wish to skip from the beginning of the recording. Enter 0 for none, etc. and follow with the (#) key. That's it! follow the directions above, and you can listen to the teleclass as many times as you want, for the next 20 days. After that, the recording will no longer be available.

Thanks, and enjoy the recording.

Staying true to this month's theme of Act It Believe It Become It, here is a quote from the author of Bastard Out of Carolina, Dorothy Allison: "I believe the secret to writing is that fiction never exceeds the reach of the writer's courage. The best fiction comes from the place where terror hides, the edge of our worst stuff. And I know you can fake that courage when you don't think of yourself as courageous – because I have done it. And that is not a bad thing, to fake it until you can make it. I know that until I started pushing on my own fears, telling the stories that were hardest for me, writing about exactly the things I was most afraid of and unsure about, I wasn't writing worth a damn."

Now come on, get writing... or at least start faking it until you wake up one day as a best selling author!

Writing Assignment:

IMPROVERSATIONS™

Lisa: Hey, have you heard of this new form of writing called Improversations?
Randy: Huh? Nah. What's that?
Lisa: Well, it's an improvised conversation. I just got a bit lonely from writing this newsletter all by myself so I decided to invite the readers to participate in some of the writing. It's kind of an experiment.
Randy: Okay. How does it work?
Lisa: This month I start a provocative or interesting conversation and then the next month someone else continues it, and the following month someone else takes it up and we watch in breathless fascination where it all goes. Sort of like My Dinner With Andre in monthly installments. Readers should e-mail me their own follow-up paragraphs and the "best" one (the one that IMO takes the conversation in the most creative, unexpected or outrageous direction) gets printed and wins a thirty-day downloadable copy of Write On.
Randy: Cool. I want that.
Lisa: Then get ready to write. (a pause) I heard a Japanese scientist did an experiment where he played classical music and heavy metal music while ice crystals formed. The crystals formed under the classical music were beautiful and symmetrical. The heavy metal ones were all misshapen and weird-looking. Does that mean if you want to be more attractive or lose weight all you have to do is listen to classical music and voila, you look like Angelina Jolie?

Okay, your turn. Send in your Improversation and continue the dialogue (between 65-100 words only, please)...

Andrew Aronsohn
This month's Artist is an exceptionally talented teenager, Andrew Aronsohn of Sherman Oaks, who in addition to being a high school student is a writer, producer, director and musician. I met him about two years ago through his father, TV producer Lee Aronsohn, and since then have watched him grow exponentially as a creative force. As you might guess from his photo, Andrew is his own person and plays by no one else's rules. Already a bit controversial at age sixteen, he's never swayed by others; every piece of art he creates has his distinctive mark on it -- the sign of a true artist. Andrew has already completed six short films this past year, and upwards of fifteen in total. He plays in a band called Delfloraphoniks -- for fun, he says, no rock star aspirations (yet). You can hear Andrew's music on the internet, via the link listed below. He claims he finds his inspiration through boredom, and from things that look interesting or strange. Andrew believes that witches have endowed him with powers which can only be described as fantastic, and insists his favorite pastime is arguing. Well, there's no arguing with the fact that Andrew is a gifted young man with a big career ahead of him.

In Hindu mythology an Avatar is a spirit guide and helper, and that's what we call our monthly selection of a person or organization whose mission is to assist individuals and companies on a higher level than most, and whose skills and talents we believe will make your life easier and happier. They will give you the room and support to grow into your life's work.

Lisa Ristorucci
This month's Avatar is Lisa Ristorucci, founder of Gofer Girls, a full-service agency dedicated to saving professionals valuable time. "We run your errands so you don't run out of time," is their motto. Lisa came highly recommended by a close friend and colleague, the Organizing Maniac, June Saruwatari, and I have been working with Lisa for about three months now.

I hired her over the phone to take care of some particularly tedious tasks that were important but very time consuming. I felt I needed to spend my time creating, not getting buried in paper work, long lines and phone calls. Because I trusted June's referral, I gave Lisa all my personal information, credit card numbers, etc., and let her take off and do her thing. It was the best decision I made during that extremely hectic time. She not only got everything done on time and as scheduled, but she was always pleasant and upbeat and nothing deterred her, not even the dullest tasks I foisted on her. Lisa's company practices the old dictum that the customer is always right – a philosophy that really works for me! Take it from one who has worked with many personal assistants over the past decade, that sort of attitude is rare to find these days.

The seed for Gofer Girls was planted while Lisa was still a student at UCLA. While there she worked as a supervisor for the cutting-edge companies Valet of the Dolls and Valet Girls, and also as a personal assistant for several people. Through these experiences Lisa came to understand the value of the harried professional's time, and realized the urgent need for a temporary personal assistant service that could handle a wide range of chores and accommodate the most hectic schedule. Lisa focused all her energies on creating a company of gals-Friday, who could run the gamut of errands for those people who find there is never enough time in the day. In my opinion, she has succeeded admirably!

Carol Buckley
Someone who exemplifies this month's theme is our Hero, Carol Buckley. I met Carol about five years ago while I was a field producer for the documentary series Saving the Endangered Species. We were working on an elephant episode and part of my job was to find three elephant experts in various positions. One of the three I discovered was Carol. When I landed on her website while surfing the web, and read about the abuse elephants in zoos and circuses endure, my heart sank. But I continued reading, and learned more about Carol and the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, of which she was a founder. I called her immediately and after several days we finally connected, and I did a story on her.

Carol owned and operated her own elephant management company, Tarra Productions, for twenty years. Her experience with Tarra Productions included promoting, exhibiting and maintaining Tarra, a female Asian elephant, and studio work for television and motion pictures. In 1995, Carol co-founded the nation's first natural-habitat refuge for sick, old and needy endangered Asian elephants. As executive director, she helps to care for six elephants at the sanctuary. The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is the nation's single natural habitat refuge developed specifically for endangered African and Asian elephants. It operates on 2,700 acres near the town of Hohenwald – 85 miles southeast of Nashville.

The Discovery channel, PBS, 20/20, CNN, and many others have helped make people aware that elephants are majestic creatures who are highly intelligent, complex, social, and sensitive individuals. In the wild, elephants are migratory, walking 30-50 miles each day, and form intricate family structures. They grieve for their dead in a more-than-instinctive way. They show humor and express compassion for one another with intense interactions. The reality of their lives in captivity is that many are in chains up to 18 hours a day. They are enclosed in steel pens – often alone – broken and controlled by fear and intimidation.

The Elephant Sanctuary exists for two reasons: First, to provide a haven for old, sick or needy elephants in a setting of green pastures, old-growth forests, spring-fed ponds and a heated barn for cold winter nights. And second, to provide education about the crisis facing these social, sensitive, passionately intense, playful, complex, exceedingly intelligent and endangered creatures.

Carol is also the founding member and an elected official of The Alliance for Elephants. To donate money or to learn more, please visit Carol's website: http://www.elephants.com/sanct

Over the past decade, I've had the amazing opportunity to travel the world (over 50 countries and counting), in the process meeting with children and adults from all walks of life, from taxi drivers to businessmen, prostitutes to heads of States, Australian Aborigines to Bedouins, and soaking in their different cultures. Many friends and colleagues have expressed an interest in traveling with me, as their guide, to introduce them to another culture and experience. With that in mind, I recently started a "Cultural Therapy" program that I am very excited about.

Cultural Therapy is about bringing a small group of volunteers somewhere in the world where they could be of service. Lend your heart and hands to an orphanage in Phnom Penh or Cuzco or anywhere else we're needed to improve lives. You will learn first-hand about your host community's culture and history while serving as a valuable resource to children and adults. At the same time, you wage peace and gain new perspectives of the world in one, two or three weeks. It is a rare opportunity to travel deep into the heart of a community – where you'll arrive as a welcomed guest and leave as a trusted friend.

One of the bonuses of these trips is that in the evenings, you will have the option of doing nothing but relaxing or you can choose to process your learnings with me and my staff through counseling/Soul Blazing and writing exercises, guided yoga classes, and exploring the culture of the country we're visiting. Digging deeper into yourself while everything is fresh and new and your emotions are raw, I have found, makes the trip all the more enriching.

FUN FACT: Why is NYC called the Big Apple?

Answer: In the 1920s, a sportswriter for the Morning Telegraph named John Fitzgerald overheard stablehands in New Orleans refer to NYC's racetracks as "the Big Apple." He named his column "Around the Big Apple." A decade later, jazz musicians adopted the term to refer to New York City, and especially Harlem, as the jazz capital of the world. There are many apples on the trees of success, they were saying, but when you pick New York City, you pick the big apple.

Have you been Soul Blazed today? If not ... why not? Are you in denial? All the more proof you need some Soul Blazing!

What is Soul Blazing?

Soul Blazing is an accelerated method of stripping away a person's masks, revealing "character flaws" and turning them into strengths. It is about discovering one's authentic soul and embarking on the life journey one was born to take. Soul Blazing adapts proven techniques from a variety of different analytical approaches (Gestalt, Psychosynthesis, Jungian Analysis, Reality Therapy and others) and adds original techniques to form a completely new paradigm in emotional healing. It is not for the faint of heart. It is tough love to help you break down the mythology that you created for yourself and together we rebuild you from the inside out.

"World class intervention. Lisa molds and demonstrates what you're afraid of and what is holding you back so you can "get it."
– Ron Hulnick, President, University of Santa Monica

"Lisa is a kick-ass counselor"
– Sarah Sontag, Yoga Instructor/ Author, New York

"Lisa, you're magical."
– Lee Aronsohn, Creator/Writer/Producer of Two and a Half Men

Five pieces of coal, a carrot, and a scarf are lying on the lawn. Nobody put them on the lawn, but there is a perfectly logical reason for their being there. What is it?

Answer: They were used by children who made a snowman. The snow has now melted. All things must pass.
