Lisa Haisa Composing a Life
"Composing A Life": Blazing a Path to Your Authentic Self February 2006

Hello, Hi y'all, Goeiedag, Buenos dias, Kemitee choo!

This month's theme is: DIGGING DEEPER

Lisa HaishaI wanted to thank the many readers (over 3500 and counting) for taking the time out of their day to give me feedback on these monthly newsletters. It helps me choose the Artist, Avatar, and Hero and the theme of the following newsletter. So, please keep them coming. The letters I received last month thanked me for introducing them to some amazing people that uthey have contacted and benefited from and the majority asked me to write about how to find their voice and their passions. They wanted to learn how to feel, explore their hearts and souls on a deeper level, to travel, and feel secure in these intense times.

I agree with the artist of the month, Chris Pierce who said he enjoys meeting people from all over the world with a common desire to "feel something." That is how I have lived my life for the past decade, even though sometimes it is very painful putting your heart and soul on the line; but not doing it is not living.

We are all born with many voices inside us trying to be heard--and sooner rather than later, I believe we choose the dominant one that our parents and siblings bring out in us. Women, especially, are trained to cut off their voices and emotions early on to be accepted. Our voice goes high in our heads so nobody will know who we really are. We don't know even know we’re doing it. Once we learn to speak from our souls, our voices will naturally drop.

We also have mastered how to separate ourselves from ourselves and fill the empty spaces inside with addictions. In order to get rid of the addictions, we must fill our cores with something else, such as spirit and self-love, or go back to our addictions. The disease to please, the need to be "perfect" is so prevalent in our society. Gods are perfect, humans are mortal. That disease is toxic to the soul.

I encourage you to re-inhabit yourselves and take charge of your lives. Your time here on earth is not a dress rehearsal. I don't want to die without at least doing my best to make myself whole. It took me many years to understand this—the importance of being intentional with my life. I must decide what I need to do now, in order to live my life fully and without regrets — and then set my intentions and live. The decision-making process can be painful, I know, but it is part of the journey of living an authentic life.

We must live in the present and grow towards the future. Everyone and everything in life can be your teacher. There is no one guru or master who can solve all your problems. You have to experiment and discover your own truth. Don't just believe something because someone else says so. Go out there and have the guts to be wrong, to fall flat on your face, to love deeply. That's how you learn. Traveling, books, family, strangers and music are my best teachers today.

Just remember, if problems end, life ends. Until next time… What comes from the heart goes to the heart.

Your Soul Blazer,
Lisa Haisha

To think that children have come to a place where their words can now teach the world. Whispers from Children's Hearts, touches the inner ear of those willing to listen to what they have to say from our inner knowing. Listen. Write On
Write On Book Waterfall
by Guri Mehta (wife of Nipun the Hero this month)

I want to find where the waterfall starts.
I want to go where the clouds meet,
and decide -- when to rain.

I want to learn from the wind
how it knows which way
to go.

I want to ask the sparrow, how long?
Before it gets tired of flapping those wings.

I want to ask the peacock, how it got to be so graceful
and so colorful too.

I want to ask the flies, if they like sweets
for the same reason that I like them.

I want to ask the lion, if he would consider
going vegetarian.

I want to ask the flowers, how they know when to bloom.

I want to ask the apple tree, how it grew so big
from such a tiny seed.

So many questions
Swirling in my head.

But for today, I think I'll just sit here
drinking tea and watching the rain
drop gently onto the ground making sure that
the earth has plenty to drink.

Writing Assignment:

Life is an interesting journey... it makes me think of my desire sometimes to be completely anonymous. What if you just existed … nobody knew your past, present, future, your name, parents, or your family or anything that could define me by providing a relationship to it... what if... you just let everything drop away and ... and don't know what. Write about how you think you would feel or how different your life would be.

Artist of the Month
Chris Pierce
I first heard Chris play about one year ago at The Viper Room. My best friend, Feng Shui expert and writer Deborah Kagan took me there to see this magical man perform. The first time she heard him, she fell in love and became an instant fan, as have many--and I get why. He is extremely charismatic and his lyrics touch the soul and dig deeply with their simplicity, honesty and insight. When it came time to pick an artist of the month for this issue (Valentine's Day), I thought: who better than Chris, who touches people's hearts with every word and gesture when he performs?

We had a couple of lengthy chats over the phone, and then I went to see perform again, live at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica. After that, I became an even bigger fan. Chris mesmerized the audience with songs like You're Beautiful and You're Killing Me-- my two favorites.

Chris began performing in a church choir at age five, and then in a boy's club and a community theater. "Music was the safest place to be," explains Chris. His parents loved music and turned Chris on to a variety of different sounds from their vast record collections. His parents saw his connection to music when he was a very young boy, and wisely decided to nurture it. He started his first band in high school, covering tunes from the Beatles and Prince.

Life is his muse, declares Chris, the source of his inspiration. After traveling around the world as the opening act for Seal, he was gratified to see that his music translates into many different cultures. Working with Seal, he says, was like dreaming while awake.

Chris insists his best friend is his mother (that's a good sign for the ladies out there!). He is single and not, not looking for that special one. He believes life unfolds naturally, and when it's right, it will be right. Being part of his audience, I talked with many of the screaming female fans and they all thought they were either meant to be with Chris or actually knew him and felt he was the most gentle, loving, honest person they knew. All raves … one after another. No one had a bad thing to say and everyone was over the top with praise. Chris is lucky to have so much love in his life--his mother, his music, hundreds of friends--and to be in such close contact with Source.

Thank you, Chris, for being a vessel for us to dig deeper inside ourselves and find the beauty within--just what your mother was searching for.

Avatar of the Month
In Hindu mythology an Avatar is a spirit guide and helper, and that's what we call our monthly selection of a person or organization whose mission is to assist individuals and companies on a higher level than most, and whose skills and talents we believe will make your life easier and happier. They will give you the room and support to grow into your life's work.

Astarius
I talked in an earlier newsletter about meeting Ben Vereen in 2005, at a spiritual retreat. At that time, we were both in a space of healing and contemplation--going within and listening. Ben turned me onto some music that he felt had touched his soul. I was also immediately drawn to it, and had Ben put his music on my iPod. The music felt to me like a vessel for getting in touch with my inner voice. It took me to a deep place of non-thinking and peace. Over one year later, I still listen to this music and still get the same benefits. It is still a part of my meditation routine, and its sounds always feels fresh.

The music I was introduced to was that of a singer named Astarius. What is so special to me about Astarius's music is how he incorporates spoken word and vocal overtones in a unique way that comes straight from his heart.

When I reached him on the phone, my first reaction was how centered and grounded Astarius was. Much more than a great musician, he is a loving, nurturing soul and a healer. One of his greatest passions is what he calls Sound Healing, using a didgeridoo and vocal overtones. He is also a spiritual teacher, poet and astrologer. Astarius gave me a Sound Healing over the phone, demonstrating his techniques, and I truly felt his energy, love and dedication.

Astarius has been dedicated to Spiritual Work for more than thirty years. His music is created with the intention to heal and uplift, and his poetry points the way to the Higher Self. His approach to Astrology helps the client gain insight and awaken personal power. He says he has healed thousands of people over the past couple of decades.

You can meet Astarius and book a session with him at the Conscious Life Expo this coming weekend. He will be in Booth 501 in the Pacific Ballroom.

Hero of the Month
Nipun Mehta
I met Nipun while surfing the net. I somehow stumbled across his website and couldn't break away from it. He has so much heart and passion for what he stands for. At a mere 30 years of age, he has taken on much more than others … I'll explain. By high school Nipun's goal in life was to either become a tennis pro or a Himalayan Yogi. At the age of 17, he says he was transformed in ways he can't describe in a few sentences. After that, he got a degree from UC Berkeley in Computer Science and Philosophy. With a job at Sun Microsystems in his third year of college, he says he was making more money than he could spend. So what did he do? He gave most of it away. First he gave the money, then some of his time, and then finally himself.

In April 1999, three friends joined Nipun on a project to help build a website for a homeless shelter; that effort later came to known as CharityFocus. Today, its 8500 volunteers incubate compassionate action in a multitude of ways. CharityFocus is still fully volunteer-run; in 2001, Nipun quit his job to become a full time volunteer. He didn't have a plan of survival beyond six months, but he claims, so far, so good.

Around mid-2004, Nipun married to his longtime inspiration -- Guri Grewal (you can read her poem in the WRITE ON section). In January 2005, they left everything to head on an open-ended, unscripted walking pilgrimage across India to "use our hands to do random acts of kindness, use our heads to profile inspiring people, and use our hearts to cultivate truth."

Nipun's Final Words from what he learned from his pilgrimage:

Inspiration is not only a matter of being 'pumped up.' It is, at its core, a deep communion with one's love for humanity and life itself.

Happiness lies in accepting life. That moment of pure acceptance gives birth to a flame of compassion that is not about getting, wanting, or wishing but rather about the most sincere simplicity -- a simplicity of the heart that knows no fears, feels no hatred, and manifests the purest spirit of service.

Cultural Therapy

Over the past decade, I've had the amazing experience traveling the world (over 50 countries and counting), in the process meeting with children and adults from all walks of life, from taxi drivers to businessmen, prostitutes to heads of States, Australian Aborigines to Bedouins, and soaking in their different cultures. Many friends and colleagues have expressed an interest in traveling with me, as their guide, to introduce them to another culture and experience. With that in mind, I recently started a "Cultural Therapy" program that I am very excited about.

Cultural Therapy is about bringing a small group of volunteers somewhere in the world where they could be of service. Lend your heart and hands to an orphanage in Phnom Penh or Cuzco or anywhere else we're needed to improve lives. You will learn first-hand about your host community's culture and history while serving as a valuable resource to children and adults. At the same time, you wage peace and gain new perspectives of the world in one, two or three weeks. It is a privilege to travel deep into the heart of a community – where you'll arrive as a welcomed guest and leave as a trusted friend.

One of the bonuses of these trips is that in the evenings, you will have the option of doing nothing but relaxing or you can choose to process your learnings with me and my staff through counseling/Soul Blazing and writing exercises, guided yoga classes, and exploring the culture of the country we're visiting. Digging deeper into yourself while everything is fresh and new and your emotions are raw, I have found, makes the trip all the more enriching.

Sign up here if you're interested in hearing about our next trip.

Soul Blazing

Have you been Soul Blazed today? If not ... why not? Are you in denial? All the more proof you need some Soul Blazing!

What is
Soul Blazing?

Soul Blazing is one soul talking to another unfettered by the constraints of our minds or our personalities. When that dialogue is allowed to occur, the possibilities for growth are endless.

"I dare you not to come away from your first mentoring/coaching session with Lisa and not feel more alive and inspired than you've ever felt in your life."
–Steve Palen, actor/artist, Santa Monica

"You've really stirred my soul and I haven't been able to stop thinking about your comments."
Saro Solis, actor, LA

"I want to say thank you for all the love and energy you poured on me while in Costa Rica. You will forever be in my heart and prayers. Since I've been back home I have noticed a huge difference in myself and everyone around me, its hard to explain but its like I feel everyone, even my mother opened up and explained things that I did not believe she was capable of expressing but she did and I understand her better now. You started a fire inside of me Lisa, I will never be the same and I love it."
–Edwin Martinez, Georgia

Brain Food

Ali, Ben, and Cybil were born in 1309, 1310 and 1311 in the same district in old Jerusalem. They grew up and lived their whole lives in this same area. Each lived to be over 60 and each had a full and active life. However, the three men never saw each other. Why should this be so?

FUN FACT ANSWER
Like the ancient Greeks, the Polynesians had a pantheon of gods and a body of myths describing the supernaturals, usually human, often divine. Hula was part of the Polynesian culture. Stories about the gods, and historical events were passed on in the oral tradition by oli (chants) and mele (songs accompanied by music and dance). The apo (male or female chanter) was able to recall and repeat chants for hours without error. In this way, sacred lore passed from one generation to the next. Oli and mele were similar to modern poetry; they utilized interior rhyme, hidden meanings, multi-leveled symbolism, unifying repetition, anger, embarrassment, joy, grief, honor – and humor.

Hula dances were an integral part of the culture when Captain Cook landed on the Island of Kaua'i in 1778, discovering for the Euro-American Civilization this last outpost of Oceanic Islands. Despite later attempts by Christian missionaries to stamp them out, the Hula dancing tradition persisted and survives to this day. Back to Fun Fact.

BRAIN FOOD ANSWER
Ali was a Muslim, Ben a Jew, and Cyril was Christian. Ali was born in 1309 of the Muslim calendar. The starting point for the Muslim calendar is the emigration of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina I AD 622. Consequently, the Muslim year 1309 equates to 1930 A.D. Similarly, Ben's birthdate falls under the Jewish calendar, which started in 3761 B.C. So, Ben was born over 3,000 years before Cyrill, who in turn was born 619 years before Ali. Back to Brain Food.
